Committing a Crime Using Facebook: A Gunman Updates His FB Status and Wall

An armed man in Salt Lake City took a woman hostage and updated friends and family about the incident on Facebook.

“I’m currently in a standoff … kinda ugly, but ready for whatever,” Valdez first wrote on his wall.

“I love u guyz and if I don’t make it out of here alive that I’m in a better place and u were all great friends.”

According to the Associated Press, the armed man, Jason Valdez made six status updates and posted pictures of himself and the woman. He captioned one of them, “Got a cute `Hostage’ huh."

He also added at least a dozen new Facebook friends during the standoff. Friends and family responded with more than 100 messages.

Valdez even got some help from the outside over the social network, a friend posted that a SWAT officer was hiding in the bushes, according to the Associated Press.

"Thank you homie," Valdez replied. "Good looking out."

Authorites believe Valdez’s Facebook communication gave him an advantage in the standoff. They are discussing whether his friends should be charged with obstruction of justice for interfering with a police investigation.
